Jim
DeShaies' Amazing Record
Pitcher Jim Deshaies went 12-5 with a 3.25 ERA as a
rookie for the 1986 NL West-winning Astros. On September
23 of that year, he set a modern day, Major League record
by striking out the first eight Los Angeles Dodgers
that he faced. To end the streak, Dodger manager Tommy
Lasorda sent up pinch-hitter Larry See to hit for starting
pitcher Dennis Powell in the third inning. He popped
out. This ball is the ball that struck out the eighth
batter, setting this incredible record.
