Bob Nieman will forever hold
a place in the record books as the first and, until 2000,
only player in the history of baseball to hit a homer
in his first two professional at-bats. He accomplished
this astonishing feat while at Fenway over 55 years ago.
This ball, hit off of Mickey McDermott, is the actual
second home run ball that he hit. Once part of his personal
collection, this Official American League baseball was
inscribed by Nieman in black ballpoint, “Record
Setting Ball. Home Runs First Two At Bats. This Is The
Second.” On the opposite panel, the ball reads,
“2nd HR. 1st Game. September 14, 1951. Off Mickey
McDermott.”
