Second Night Game in Baseball History
At Ebbets Field in Brooklyn on June 15, 1938, baseball's
second night game occurred. The first had been at
Crosley Field in Cincinnati on May 24, 1935. President
Roosevelt, from the White House 600 miles away,
threw the switch that literally lit up baseball.
What made Brooklyn's night game doubly historic
was the feat of a slim left-handed Cincinnati pitcher
named Johnny Vander Meer, who had pitched a no-hit
game four days previously and was going for his
2nd no-hitter in a row. He succeeded. This is a
general view of the event. 6/15/38 |
