Political Blog

In May, 2006, I was asked to write some political articles by The Huffington Post. Many of my articles also run in RealClearPolitics.com (RCP), National Review Online (NRO), PoliticalMavens.com and other sites. They are all archived here.

This section is for my political articles (though I throw a “culture” piece in occasionally). Feel free to comment. Whether you agree or disagree, I’ll put your comment up – Just try and keep it somewhat civil.

The article of mine that has been most read is "Why I Left The Left".
After it came out, I got an invitation to The White House.

I write my thoughts and ideas in the Personal section. My favorite quotes from over the years (plus a few I’ve written myself) are in the Quotes section.

My Hat is Off to Obama

I have real misgivings about Obama and do not consider myself, in the least, one of his supporters.

Why? Because he a) hasn't accomplished much, 2) voted on the far left-side for much of his short tenure in Congress and 3) stayed in that church with the racist, anti-American Reverend Wright for 20 years, which makes me think that he believes a lot of the stuff that came out of that church.

All that being said, I think that his retracing of President Lincoln's steps on the way to his inauguration, and his use of Lincoln's bible is a classy, historic "nod" to the man who ended slavery. I just wanted to go on record as saying that.

Comments | Post a Comment

Should he grow a scraggly beard and don a top hat for the event, the effects would really an Illinois statesman reincarnation (except for the honesty and humility character traits lacking in this Lincoln wannabe!
I have to give him his credit where it is due.
Realizing the way to play the game: how to draw support from the right money people, media schmoozing and reciprocation, and the expertly played victim mentality game, are much more important than any substance in winning political office.
I see his Lincoln emulation act as just another of the narcissist personality manifestations we will continue to witness.
The process of ending slavery started at our founding as a country.
Lincoln went to war to prevent succession of the South and abolition of slavery was the victors spoils.
It is interesting to ready the treaty signed by Britain and the US after the war of 1812 where both sides agreed that slavery was morally wrong and that no effort should be spared to end it.

Treaty of Ghent
ARTICLE THE TENTH.

Whereas the Traffic in Slaves is irreconcilable with the principles of humanity and Justice, and whereas both His Majesty and the United States are desirous of continuing their efforts to promote its entire abolition, it is hereby agreed that both the contracting parties shall use their best endeavours to accomplish so desirable an object.

Great cite, Lib! Although I wouldn't call ending slavery a "spoil of war," exactly. Lincoln decreed the end of slavery as primarily a military manoeuver. Although, the war WAS about slavery, really and not about "states rights" or the primacy of the North over the South.

Posted by: Lev Bronstein at January 14, 2009 2:39 PM

I agree that the war was about slavery, the South had grown economically tied to it and were not about to give it up. However the history is that was not the primary reason for Lincoln- his primary motive was to save the union.
Whatever the primary motive was both sides knew what was at stake.
Initially Lincoln campaigned on a platform for containment of slavery to the southern seven states and when he won it triggered their secession. Hostilities began in April of 1861 and his Emancipation Proclamation was not made until September 1861 which than listed abolition as an objective of the war.

"I have real misgivings about Obama and do not consider myself, in the least, a supporter of his".

Come toward the light, Seth. Don't be afraid. We dems have a very big tent and it's getting bigger every single day. Even Pat Robertson has been speaking glowingly of Obama. Before you know it, even Hannity and Limbaugh will be praising him. After all the conservatives have probably lost WAY more money in the stock market than the liberals and they are now welcoming the change.

"Come toward the light, Seth. Don't be afraid."

When Obama does something that impresses me -- outside of winning the presidency -- I'll be the first to praise him. However, so far, he hasn't accomplished anything in his life, (I don't think that he wrote either of his books), so the jury is still WAY out.

One might consider being faculty at Harvard Law School as a little more than nothing. But I know, Obama, for some reasons understood only by fans of Dick Cheney, really scares the bejeesus out of you.

Posted by: Lev Bronstein at January 16, 2009 12:56 PM

Seth, you don't know his accomplishments because you CHOOSE NOT to know. By saying you don't believe he wrote his books implies that you read them, therefore you must know something that he can claim credit for. My guess is that you haven't read his books. Maybe you didn't write the books you say you wrote, who knows? It's easy to make claims with nothing to back them up. If you don't know what Obama has done, then I would have to say you haven't been paying attention for the last two years and if you REALLY wanted to know, all you have to do is go to his website.

"One might consider being faculty at Harvard Law School as a little more than nothing. But I know, Obama, for some reasons understood only by fans of Dick Cheney, really scares the bejeesus out of you."

Dick Cheney has been in the government since 1969. He went back to the private sector four times, for little jobs like being the CEO of small companies like Halliburton. He's been a chief of staff, a secretary of defense, a multi-term congressman and the Vice President of the United States during a time of war...a war he has helped to win.

And you're comparing his gravitas to someone who was once on the faculty of Harvard Law School for a year?

I don't need to say anymore.

Posted by: seth at January 17, 2009 9:02 AM

"Seth, you don't know his accomplishments because you CHOOSE NOT to know."

Not. His accomplishments have been lain before us and they are unimpressive. Let's take a little test.

We now have a person making world-altering decisions who:

1) Has done it before as a twice-elected governor of a large state?

No. That would be the wrong answer. Obama won one term in the Senate and served less than half of it. The twice-elected governor of a large state would be George W. Bush.

2) Has years of foreign policy experience, whose expertise can help move the Middle East toward Democracy?

No. That would be incorrect unless you believe that Obama's insultingly silly claim of living in Indonesia when he was 6 helps him understand the region.

The right answer is that Obama was elected because the Left, still obsessed with the "evil" Bush, did not care about credentials. They did not care about experience. They did not care about associations with convicted felons, former unrepentant terrorist friends, racist mentors (Reverend Wright) or his 'blame America first,' loudmouth wife.

No. The election and the rise of Obama had everything to do with "we hate Bush" -- all while Bush was keeping the whiners safe and sound in 53 straight months of unprecedented growth (before the meltdown of the banking system, brought on by Barney Frank and Chris Dodd's politically correct propping up of Fannie and Freddie).

The ones who are going to need "HOPE" are us, in that we now have a president who didn't deserve to be re-elected to his own senate seat!

"By saying you don't believe he wrote his books implies that you read them, therefore you must know something that he can claim credit for. "

Ayres wrote his books. Obama got an advance for book #1, but couldn't write it. Before the book company pulled out, suddenly a beautifully written transcript appeared. Many have studied the style of writing in Ayres' and Obama's books and have agreed that Obama's books are completely written in Ayres' style and use very similar metaphors to those used by Ayres.

Funny, Obama was never known as a writer before his books. He has never written anything that matches the prose of his books since they came out. He didn't write his books. Considering who Obama chose as his VP -- the plagiarist Joe Biden -- should it be any surprise? It's not to me.

Posted by: seth at January 17, 2009 9:16 AM

Seth -- you inflate your differences with Obama to epic preportions. You are the one who writes as if the man is the anti-christ. Did you actually write the songs you say you did? How the hell would anyone actually know? Maybe Paul Ayers did. Such childish drivel. It will be a relief to have Obama actually be in office so you can wax indignant about things that he actually might have done, rather than his lack of experience or character.

I wasn't comparing Obama's "gravitas" to Cheney's. That Dick is really one of a kind. Ready to ream the ass of almost the entire nation to benefit a miniscule group of energy and defense industrialists (and to make the US president a virtual king). In the end, though, I think he and Bush damaged US capitalism in a big way -- that should upset you. When they came in the US was doing rather well. They leave with the country in a disasterous footing on all fronts (yes, even with 0, that's ZERO terrorist attacks on US soil since 9/11) -- but Cheney's got gravitas! Bush, on the other hand, has about as much Gravitas as Howdy Doody or Alfred E. Newman.

Posted by: Lev Bronstein at January 18, 2009 5:49 PM

"Did you actually write the songs you say you did? How the hell would anyone actually know? "

Because I've written over 500 songs. Obama wrote a poem at Occidental College that he admitted was ridiculous. He wrote an essay regarding "organizing after Saul Alinsky." There is zero history to suggest he was or is a writer. The same metaphors that Ayres used in his own books are all over Obama's books. Here's a piece that shows that Ayres was very likely the real writer of Obama's books:

http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/10/evidence_mounts_ayers_cowrote.html

"Maybe Paul Ayers did. Such childish drivel."

It's William Ayres and it's not drivel. Obama's bestsellers were purported to have been written by him -- HIS autobiographies. By the way, how many people write two autobiographies about their lives at 42? What had he accomplished that deserved TWO tomes about himself? It goes to his CHARACTER.

But, Lefties care not for character -- that usually gets in the way of their favorite candidates -- like Ted Kennedy allowing Mary Jo Kopechne to die at Chappaquiddick. It was inconvenient and he was "liked" by his Leftists cohorts. So, he was given a pass, just like you want to do with Obama and his non-authorship of his own books.

Your decision to dismiss it as "childish drivel" keeps with the way in which the Left treats major character deficiencies in its favorite politicians, you dismiss them with a wave of your hand.

"It will be a relief to have Obama actually be in office so you can wax indignant about things that he actually might have done, rather than his lack of experience or character."

Yeah, what are stupid little things like having no experience when entering the presidency. Stupid me!

"I wasn't comparing Obama's "gravitas" to Cheney's."

Good. Because a comparison can't even be imagined. Cheney is so many light years ahead of Obama regarding "gravitas" and stature that it's a non-issue.

"That Dick is really one of a kind. Ready to ream the ass of almost the entire nation to benefit a miniscule group of energy and defense industrialists"

Oy, the nutty stuff...Did Bill Clinton want to benefit a minuscule group when he HIRED HALLIBURTON in the 90s to do the same work as it is doing in Iraq? Next -

"In the end, though, I think he and Bush damaged US capitalism in a big way"

Really? There was 53 straight months of growth in the U.S. before this unforeseen economic tumble occurred. AND, it was brought on NOT by Bush, but by Democrats who pushed easy loans for minorities (Fannie, Freddie).

"When they came in the US was doing rather well."

Another falsehood. Bush became president 300 days into a bear market that began on March 24, 2000. Then, only nine months into his presidency, the country was hit by 9-11.

George W. Bush made the tough decisions. He eliminated the world of the Saddam Hussein, created Democracies in Iraq and Afghanistan (giving hope to hundreds of millions of Arabs who didn't have it!), devastated Al Qaeda in Iraq and initiated the highly successful No Child Left Behind Act that has our schoolchildren testing significantly better than before his presidency. And he did all of this in the face of the most obnoxious opposition -- during wartime -- that this country has ever witnessed. The despicable behavior of the Left during these past few years speaks for itself.

I want Obama to do well. Thus far, even before taking office, he's publicly agreed with all the important Bush stances and policies. The Left doesn't care as long as the "vibe" changes.

My problem with Obama is that all of these people are bowing in deference to a guy who isn't particularly impressive. He never ran a company, never took an important stand in the public square, never did anything to warrant the glazed-over adulation of his supporters.

The country needs to HOPE Obama isn't as deeply mediocre as I suspect he is.

Posted by: seth at January 19, 2009 12:58 AM

Please excuse the slip, I meant to say Kevin Ayers (he of Soft Machine). It was a joke. I'm sure you wrote your songs, seth -- it's just this paranoid stuff about Obama (he's really a space alien!) is really silly. He'll have a record soon enough and then you can lambaste him. I don't like or support him, you know. I guess you can't stand that people seem to really like the guy.

Now, as for your trying to turn Bush's record on economics - well, it's a very difficult case to make. It's like when people try to make a hall of fame case for good but not great, baseball players. (e.g., he hit more triples than Babe Ruth, more doubles than Mantle, a higher slugging percentage than Lou Brock, etc.) You are cutting the pie in a very skewed way to say something positive about the economy during his tenure. Overall job loss, market meltdown, spiraling debt, possible depression looming. I'd say that puts him on par with the likes of Len Boehmer, Tom Egan and Buddy Biancalana for HOF status.

Posted by: Lev Bronstein at January 19, 2009 8:58 AM

"it's just this paranoid stuff about Obama (he's really a space alien!) is really silly."

There's nothing 'paranoid' about being queasy about handing the presidency to a guy with no experience. What is "silly" is the way that the Left thinks we need to be SAVED from the horrific circumstances in which we live and that only THIS guy can "save" us.

It's not even silly, it's deeply pathetic. Who is Barack Obama? The media sure didn't want you to know. What did he do to inspire confidence? In short, Obama is much better suited to being either a Tony Robbins "you can change your life" type of guy or a preacher. His content is mostly boilerplate.

I'm officially AGAINST him. Why? Because he's a liberal and liberals are mostly morally confused people.

George W. Bush made the very tough decisions -- the biggest being the SURGE which won us Iraq. He did that in the face of an easy "out." He showed tremendous toughness. I admire that. What has Obama done in comparison? Stayed in an anti-American, anti-Semitic church until he was absolutely forced to quit it?

I prefer people -- like George W. Bush, or even Sarah Palin -- who know right and wrong and don't equivocate between them, which the Left is built to do: "Let's everyone play nice!"

Posted by: seth at January 19, 2009 10:20 AM

I believe Bush is obstinate, or perseverative, rather than "tough." I don't think everybody should play nice. I think Bush and Cheney should be prosecuted for war crimes, including torture -- Unfortunately that's not going to happen. Anyway, Bush as a model of moral character is hilarious.

Posted by: Lev Bronstein at January 19, 2009 2:38 PM

"I believe Bush is obstinate, or perseverative, rather than "tough.""

It's all the same thing and because of that trait, we beat Al Qaeda in Iraq, which was a HUGE blow to their violent, hate-filled, fascist movement.

"I don't think everybody should play nice. I think Bush and Cheney should be prosecuted for war crimes"

For what? "Fooling people" into war? The 23 Democratic Senators who voted FOR the war saw the same evidence as the President. To this day, Hillary Clinton hasn't taken back her vote on the war. You want to prosecute her too?

Funny: the President woke up everyday and went over very scary threat assessments in order to keep you and your family and friends safe. He accomplished this feat in spades and you want to prosecute him! Ladies and gentleman, I give you THE LEFT!

"including torture"

Torture? You mean where some real, real bad guys who had information about terrorist acts had some water up their nose for 15 seconds? I'm unmoved. Gimme the information, not the sob story about those with it!

"Anyway, Bush as a model of moral character is hilarious."

Thank God for his sterling character these past eight years. It was the foil to the Left's mixed-up, equivocating nonsense.

Well tomorrow the nuclear football will be handed off to the least qualified man to ever hold the job as president. Never mind that he probably isn't really qualified based on his extraordinary efforts to block any avenue that would lead to discovery of his birth circumstances and subsequent relevant citizenship moves by his various guardians.

He is a narcissist and a liar.

He did not write his books, nor did he do the bulk of work on any of the bills he was credited with in the Illinois legislature.

He intends to seize your private property and give it to others, just as Lev believes should happen. So, Seth 200-300 of those 500 songs he believes belong to someone else though you created them!

Everything he believes in will slow the growth of business and slow economic recovery.
If half of what he wants to do, is done, his supporters will be left wondering what happened, why are they now depending on the government to survive with less than they had before?

The problems we face today will look like the good ole days eight years from now if he wins reelection! Most likely much sooner!

When America suffers the rest of the world suffers too, watch for despots rushing into destabilized areas as America under Obama does nothing!

The former Soviet satellite countries will be the first to notice that Americas new leaders have lost their collective marbles and are throwing away their own liberty and freedoms.

As grandiose and bigger than life Obama struts into office tomorrow under the glare of a "Hollywood like" production the hype will not sweep up people like me that understand we may now be heading straight into our darkest hour.

If Obama "succeeds" I am not exaggerating to say our Constitution loses and we all lose what makes this country great.

Hi Seth,
I wanted to come to your blog being I know a little of your wonderful work, music and other. I was a bit taken back when I saw the Obama dialogue and even saddened.
I am a jewish american living abroad and proud to be a child of the earth. I am a very protective mother, and as I see it , we all deserve peace. Our world sucks right now to make a bit of humor, but in reality, we need to ALL work together, and make those words ring truth. Go along with just 4 letters. H O P E. Face it, we all need some, I sure do and so do most around the world. Does everyone get a chance to speak their true fear?
As a kind and intelligent person I have chosen to give a chance to not only Barack Obama but to our beautiful country and all those we look upon us thanks to one moment and one historical event. I am certain that no one is perfect, but I do believe that we can each make a difference if we try. You are a good man and I understand completely what you feel. Now Seth, let us all just try and give him a chance. Peace to you, BB

The Democrats are deeply complicit in the crimes committed by the US in Iraq. But since the executive actually carried out the war and conducted it the way they wanted to, I think they are more responsible. But hey, if you set up tribunals against Democratic senators for their complicity, I'd be cool with that.

Seth, I was chasing the ghost of Norman Hurricane Smith when I came across your interesting site. Keep up the good work, although, by the looks of your creativity, you don't need any encouragement from a nobody like me.
Hope, peace, love, joy and good health. I hope Bernie wasn't watching your money during the Bush Regime.
